The Presidential visit to USIU: What They Didn't Mention

On the 12th March 2015 Uhuru Kenyatta was scheduled to visit USIU-A. However, Ruto graced the university with his presence instead as Uhuru could not make it for the event. Students eagerly looked forward to and prepared for the Thursday event. However, on arriving at the school gates they knew so well and have used during their entire time at the college, they were swiftly "shooed" away.

Students were sent to use an old entrance that leads into the back of the university and the school hockey fields. No prior warning or notice was given causing expected confusion and irritation. Students travelled dutifully to class only to be forced to use a motorbike to get to their class. The boda bodas are not a safe mode of transport and reports of accidents have been reported in the past years. Nonetheless, school guards pointed wary students to these bikes in order to use a route to school they had probably never used before. This transport would cost between 40 to 50 shillings one way and the school did not offer any form of compensation for the students trouble.

Students relied on information through rumours and texts to one another to keep updated.

Thousands of students apply to USIU and put their trust in an institution that in one swift moment turned these students away from their gates. If there were no students, would there be a school? Nonetheless, such injustices will be forgotten and swept under the rug in order to avoid "ruffling any feathers". A sad day for USIU students to realise their value in this prestigious in college as they clutch a boda boda while it glides over bumps and potholes to a gate they have never used. "

Student mail? I knew about it (alumni circa 2012)

But a huge percentage of the USIU-A percentage didn't.

I'm an alumni and I read my mail. They've gone on and on about this with the VC herself even raising awareness. It's no excuse to tarnish the name of your own university because people don't check their email.

It's not really tarnishing the name of the University. Students have their views and they like to air them. This way, the university can take action, yes?

I agree with the above people, we were all informed via email and this was a one time thing, you don't face this inconvenience everyday do you? It's a little silly to see people get furious on one small thing and ignore every other good thing the uni has done.

But thats='s just human nature. People tend to make a fuss about the bad and remember the bad, forgetting about the good temporarily

I may not be a student any more but i still read my mail. Besides USIU-A has been known to always communicate in case there is any expected disruptions in the daily activities...which they did.I don't see how being asked to use a different gate equates to ''being turned away'' simply because you did not bother to check your mail. I am proud of my Alma Mater-Education to take you places!

They did communicate, nobody disagrees. But the students' problem is that communication wasn't as effective as it could've been.

I am Alumni, I live in Nigeria and I read about the entrance plan.. Unless you live under the rock, most non freshman USIU students know we always use alternative gate for big events

Or maybe (we) alumni are more informed of what is happening at our Alma Mater than the current students are. Just saying

Am sure those who are complaining about this only check their emails once in a month or so. there was a communication from the VC followed by Head of security and walk in guidelines on the said day. Dan Muchai communicated something about the day on FB page so who is on the wrong???

never informed in advance? How long have those students been freshmen? Always read your students mail before you point fingures

And you claim communication wasn't as efficient??, all communication to the USIU-Africa fraternity is done on email. Your lamenting is waay so invalid. Problem is, you are lamenting here, and on the behalf of those "students". I advice you go to admin or the people involved and air those grievances, social media will never help.

First, the write of this email is an outside, not a usiu student. Second, the writer relies on rumours. Third, communication were sent through emails and notification sent through sms. Fourth, the picture above is not usiu environment, check your facts carefully. Fifth, the writer is a sadist, thinking negative about the school. The school will remain for years but you.... Many people will benifit from the new Science block and no one will be bothering to know what happenned during the open day of the building. Clearly, you are an outsider who desire to be part of us, come to our school and you will be proud of usiu.
